Collection: California Dreaming: Truth to power

Like the internet when it began, California to many was a utopia in the making. It was born on high ideals, like those hazy days of the 60s. Over time, like everything within the capitalist system, it was monetised and is now more dominant, rich and powerful than any nation in history. Some tech billionaires have even bought islands with dreams of creating new liberal societies… which they control.

Shoshana Zuboff, in her important and disturbing book, coined the term Surveillance Capitalism, in which she describes this unprecedented power. In this California Dreaming series, I examine the lighter side of our modern life so dominated by apps and social media platforms. An age during which we seem to have happily outsourced our core competencies to useful free tech. Our lives, and especially those of our children, will be enabled and controlled by a handful of companies on the west coast of the US and China. If we are not careful, they will know us better than we do.

These designs ask us to think more about how our lives are affected by ‘Instaglam’, the ‘Metacurse’, ‘Goggle’, ‘PooTube’ and many more. It is art that makes you think, but also laugh. A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down…
